Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A controversial decision by a local Indian Juvenile Justice Board to require a 17-year-old to write an essay as part of his bail conditions following a fatal drunk driving incident has been revoked in response to public outcry.

Key Points:

  • The male teen, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of driving the Porsche that struck two individuals in Pune, Maharashtra state, on Sunday.
  • The victims, identified as Aneesh Awadhia and Ashwini Koshta, both 24-year-old software engineers, tragically died at the scene of the collision.
  • The teen, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was apprehended and brought before the local Juvenile Justice Board following the incident.

  • Surveillance footage captured the Porsche Taycan supercar purportedly driven by the teen just moments before the fatal collision. Reports indicate that the vehicle was traveling at a speed of 160 kilometers (99.4 miles) per hour.
  • According to sources, the teen had been at a bar with friends to celebrate the completion of their exams before the tragic incident occurred. Subsequent to the event, the establishment was shut down, and three individuals were arrested for serving alcohol to a minor.
  • A video recorded in the aftermath depicts an enraged crowd assaulting the teen in the street, leading to his prompt arrest.
  • Initially charged with causing death due to negligence, the teen now faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as well as offences related to drunk driving.
  • Within 15 hours of his detention, the Juvenile Justice Board granted him bail under several conditions, including penning a 300-word essay on road safety, engaging in a 15-day community service program, and undergoing psychiatric evaluation.
  • The teen’s father, identified as a prosperous businessman, was also taken into custody for purportedly permitting his son to drive. Notably, the legal driving age in India stands at 18.
  • Many critics of the Indian judiciary system lambasted what they perceive as leniency. One individual remarked, “Indian judiciary system is the biggest joke of the decade.”
  • “As per regulations, punitive measures should be taken (against the accused) to serve as a deterrent,” expressed Suresh Koshta, the father of Ashwini, in a recorded statement.

What’s Next:

  • Subsequent to public backlash, the board rescinded its initial decision on Wednesday. The teen has been relocated to a rehabilitation facility, where he will remain until June 5.
  • Authorities are seeking to prosecute him as an adult due to the severity of the offense. Amendments to India’s juvenile laws in 2015 permit the trial of individuals over 16 as adults in cases deemed heinous.
