(WFLA) — A Sarasota man, identified as Darryl Brookins, 28, was arrested on Wednesday in relation to a shooting incident that resulted in injuries to former USF and Auburn football player Brian Battie and the tragic death of his brother, Tommie Battie. The incident took place in the Tallywood Centre Plaza parking lot, located near a hookah lounge, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

During the shooting, Brian Battie sustained a gunshot wound to the head, leaving him in critical condition, while his brother Tommie was tragically pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the chest. The Battie brothers, along with three other individuals who were also injured, were swiftly transported to hospitals in Manatee and Sarasota counties for immediate medical attention.

Security Footage and Suspect Identification

An arrest report from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office revealed that security footage captured the moment when Brookins was seen leaning against a nearby business window. Subsequently, the Battie brothers approached Brookins, leading to a confrontation where shots were fired. Both parties exchanged gunfire, resulting in Brookins fleeing the scene. He was later identified as the suspect following multiple Crime Stoppers tips received by the SCSO.

Furthermore, Brookins’ abandoned vehicle was discovered in the same parking lot where the shooting took place, providing additional evidence linking him to the crime. Detectives utilised Brookins’ driver’s license photo and social media videos to positively identify him as the main suspect. It was also revealed that Brookins has a history of four prior felony convictions, adding to the severity of the charges against him.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Brookins now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Following his arrest on Wednesday, he was promptly taken into custody and is currently being held in jail pending further legal proceedings.
