Five people tragically lost their lives after a series of tornadoes tore through a small Iowa town and surrounding areas during severe storms that swept across the Midwest.
The town of Greenfield bore the brunt of the destruction, with homes and businesses flattened, cars tossed around like toys, and debris strewn across the landscape in the aftermath of the Tuesday storms.
While at least 35 people sustained injuries, authorities believe the actual number of casualties may be higher, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s statement on Wednesday.
One of the fatalities was confirmed by police in Adams County, located approximately 25 miles (40km) from Greenfield. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Monica Zamarron, tragically lost her life when her car was blown off the road.
Authorities in Greenfield have refrained from disclosing the names and ages of the deceased individuals pending notification of their next of kin.
Video footage capturing the devastation in Iowa showcased a landscape littered with flattened buildings, overturned vehicles, and shattered wind turbines.
Greenfield, a town with a population of 2,000 located about 55 miles from Des Moines, endured the deadliest tornado of them all.
Lisa Beaman recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the ceiling in her home collapse during the storm. “We were hollering, screaming,” she shared. Beaman’s husband had to be rushed for medical treatment as he lost feeling in his legs after being trapped under debris.
The local hospital in Greenfield was among the structures severely impacted, necessitating the evacuation of a dozen injured individuals to alternative medical facilities.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt Alex Dinkla described a significant portion of Greenfield as being devastated, revealing to reporters on Tuesday night that the death toll was still undetermined. “We’re still counting at this time,” he stated.
While everyone residing in the town has been located, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds refrained from confirming the number of fatalities during a press conference in Greenfield on Wednesday.
“This is a search and rescue operation that will persist throughout the day,” she emphasized.
Earlier, Governor Reynolds highlighted that several other Iowa communities had been affected by tornadoes “just a few weeks ago.” She expressed disbelief that such a catastrophic event had occurred once again.
