Accident – Death – Obituary News : The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has raised concerns about the growing prevalence of baby factories and the disturbing trend of buying and selling babies. In a recent statement released in Abuja, Director-General of NAPTIP, Professor Fatima Waziri–Azi, highlighted the alarming reports and public outcry surrounding the sale of babies and the existence of facilities dedicated to this illegal practice.

According to Professor Waziri–Azi, these baby factories operate covertly, targeting vulnerable young girls with false promises of financial gain or support. The victims are often lured into these establishments, where they are impregnated and their babies are subsequently sold. The exploitation of these unsuspecting individuals underscores the need for increased vigilance and enforcement against human trafficking.

One of the most recent incidents occurred in Umunkwa village, Umuafai Ndume Ibeku area of Umuahia North Local Government, Abia State. Ten victims, including seven young girls (six of whom are pregnant), one lactating mother, and two minor boys, were rescued from a baby factory by the Department of State Services (DSS), Abia State Command. The alleged owner of the baby factory, a sixty-three-year-old woman named Chinyere Nkwocha, was apprehended in connection with the operation.

Both the suspects and the victims have been handed over to the NAPTIP Abia State Liaison Office for further investigation and appropriate action. Professor Waziri-Azi commended the DSS Abia state command for their successful operation and urged parents and communities to remain vigilant in protecting their children from falling victim to such heinous crimes.

She emphasised the importance of collaboration with law enforcement agencies and encouraged the public to report any cases of human trafficking to NAPTIP through their toll-free number, 0703 0000 203, or short code 627 (MTN & AIRTEL Only). By working together and staying vigilant, we can combat the scourge of human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable members of our society..
