MIRPURKHAS: Tragedy struck Mirpurkhas as a 40-year-old cattle trader, Mohammad Yusuf Leghari, collapsed in the intense heat and tragically lost his life. The incident occurred in the bustling cattle market in Gulshan Colony, where the scorching heat proved fatal for the victim. He was rushed to Civil Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed his demise due to heat stroke.

Efforts to Combat the Severe Heatwave

The city of Mirpurkhas is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unbearable levels. In response to this crisis, various organisations, including political parties, social workers, and the district administration, have taken proactive measures to alleviate the impact of the heatwave on the residents. Heat stroke camps have been set up across different parts of the city, where cold water and beverages are being provided to help people cope with the extreme weather conditions.

Assistant Commissioner Tando Allahyar Faheem Shakir and Chairman Municipal Committee Syed Samar Abbas Shah Rizvi have issued a public advisory, urging citizens to limit their outdoor activities to essential tasks only and avoid unnecessary exposure to the scorching sun. Their appeal comes as a reminder of the importance of staying hydrated and seeking shelter during the peak hours of the heatwave.

Hyderabad’s Initiative for Heatwave Awareness

In Hyderabad, a joint session on heatwave awareness was successfully conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioners at the Spark School. The session, attended by representatives from Rescue 1122 and the District Health office, aimed to educate the community about the dangers of heat stroke and provide valuable information on how to prevent heat-related illnesses. The interactive session also addressed various queries raised by the students, enhancing their understanding of heatwave safety measures.

Furthermore, Hyderabad DC Zainul Abideen Memon chaired a meeting to review the arrangements for an upcoming anti-polio drive from June 3 to June 9. In light of the prevailing heatwave conditions, the officers were directed to provide water and ORS to vaccinators to safeguard them from heatstroke, ensuring their well-being during the crucial immunisation campaign.

Weather Forecast and Precautionary Measures

The local Met Office in Sukkur division has forecasted very hot and dry weather, with daytime maximum temperatures expected to reach 47-48 Celsius. Districts including Sukkur, Khairpur, Jacobabad, and Shikarpur are likely to experience extreme heat, posing a significant health risk to the residents. In response to the forecast, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for Sukkur division, advising concerned departments and district authorities to remain vigilant and prepared to address any potential emergencies.
