Accident – Death – Obituary News :

LONDON: Reports from Bangkok hospitals reveal a harrowing ordeal faced by passengers onboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, which departed from London en route to Singapore. The flight encountered sudden extreme turbulence over Myanmar, leaving a trail of chaos and injuries in its wake.

One passenger described the terrifying experience as the plane abruptly rose and plunged multiple times at an altitude of 11,300 meters (37,000 feet). The violent turbulence caused passengers to be thrown around the cabin, resulting in dents in the ceiling and numerous head injuries. Photos from inside the plane depict a scene of disarray, with food, drinks, and luggage scattered throughout the cabin, and oxygen masks dangling from the ceiling.

Emergency Landing in Bangkok

The pilot made the decision to make an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where medical personnel swiftly attended to the injured passengers. Gurneys were used to transport the injured to waiting ambulances on the tarmac. Among the 211 passengers and 18 crew members onboard, a 73-year-old British man tragically lost his life, while 104 others sustained injuries.

Intensive Care Units at Bangkok Hospitals

As of Wednesday, twenty individuals remain in intensive care units in Bangkok hospitals, receiving critical treatment for their injuries. The injured individuals hail from various countries, including Australia, Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the Philippines. The hospital staff are working tirelessly to provide care and support to those affected by the turbulence.

Relief Flight to Singapore

A relief flight carrying 131 passengers and 12 crew members safely landed at Singapore’s Changi Airport on Wednesday morning. Relatives anxiously awaited the arrival of their loved ones, embracing them with relief. However, the passengers were too shaken to speak to reporters, as the traumatic experience was still fresh in their minds.

Condolences and Investigations

Singapore Airlines’ chief executive expressed profound apologies for the distressing incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased passenger. The Singaporean Prime Minister conveyed his deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased individual, identified as Geoff Kitchen, a musical theatre director from near Bristol.

Climate Change Impact

Experts have warned that climate change may lead to an increase in clear air turbulence, which is invisible to radar. A recent study highlighted a 17 percent rise in the annual duration of clear air turbulence from 1979 to 2020, with severe cases experiencing a more than 50 percent increase. This alarming trend underscores the need for heightened awareness and preparedness in the aviation industry.
