Surprise Police Sgt. Rick Hernandez revealed that Mater had been undergoing mental health treatment and was actively seeking help for his issues. Despite their separation, Mater was committed to his treatment, which was reportedly progressing positively. Hernandez also mentioned that Mater had no prior criminal history, but police had previously intervened in a mental health crisis involving him last October.
This heartbreaking incident comes on the heels of another tragic event in Surprise, Arizona, where a 51-year-old man, Todd Christopher Marchetti, broke into a residence and held a woman and her 6-month-old baby hostage. The standoff ended in Marchetti’s death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the baby being hospitalized for gunshot wounds.
In the wake of these distressing events, the community has rallied together to support the victims and their families. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to aid the mother and baby involved in the hostage situation, raising nearly $145,000 to assist with their recovery and rebuilding efforts after the traumatic ordeal.
