A heartbreaking incident has rocked the community of Surprise, Arizona, as a man and his two young children were discovered dead in their home in what police believe to be a tragic murder-suicide.
Authorities in Surprise received a call for a wellness check on 34-year-old Brock Mater and his two children, aged 6 and 7. The call came from Mater’s estranged wife, who had become concerned after her children’s school reported an unexcused absence.
According to reports from the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, the mother had attempted to contact Mater multiple times before alerting the authorities.
Upon arriving at Mater’s residence, police made several attempts to make contact with him but received no response. Upon entering the home, officers made the grim discovery of Mater and his children, all with fatal gunshot wounds. A rifle was found on Mater’s lap at the scene.
Mater’s Mental Health History
Surprise Police Sgt. Rick Hernandez revealed that Mater had been receiving mental health treatment and was actively seeking help. Despite the couple being separated, Mater was reportedly responding well to treatment and did not have a criminal history, although police had responded to a mental health crisis involving Mater in the past.
Recent Tragedies in Surprise
This tragic incident comes shortly after another harrowing event in Surprise, where a 51-year-old man named Todd Christopher Marchetti was involved in a standoff with law enforcement after breaking into a residence and holding a woman and her 6-month-old baby hostage. The standoff ended with Marchetti taking his own life, while the baby sustained gunshot wounds and underwent surgery.
