Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking turn of events, a Kerala court has handed down the death sentence to three individuals, including a mother and her son, for the brutal murder of their 71-year-old neighbour near Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram back in 2022.
The convicted individuals, identified as Rafeeka Beevi (52), her accomplice Al Ameen (28), and her son Shafeeq (25), all residents of Kovalam, were found guilty of murdering their neighbour, Shanthakumari, in order to steal her valuable gold ornaments.
This heinous crime came to light on January 14, 2022, when the son and friends of Rafeeka Beevi’s landlord discovered blood seeping from the loft of the house where the accused resided. Upon investigation, the authorities uncovered the lifeless body of Shanthakumari hidden in the loft.
Following the discovery, the three accused individuals attempted to flee but were apprehended in Kazhakoottam and taken into custody by the police. During interrogation, the perpetrators confessed to the murder of the elderly neighbour and the subsequent theft of her jewellery.
What makes this case even more chilling is the revelation that the convicted trio had previously been involved in another murder case, this time the victim being a 14-year-old girl in Kovalam. The proceedings for this separate crime are still ongoing.
It is evident that the court’s decision to sentence the three perpetrators to death reflects the gravity of their crimes and serves as a stern warning to those who engage in such ruthless acts of violence.
