A man from Cairo has been taken into custody and charged with the killing of a student at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has apprehended and accused a man from Cairo of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection to the tragic death of a student at Kennesaw State University.

Authorities at Kennesaw State University have confirmed that a female student lost her life after being shot during a dispute that took place in front of the Austin Residence Complex on the university campus. Following the incident, the suspect, identified as Samuel Harris, fled the campus.

Samuel Harris, who is not affiliated with Kennesaw State University, faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

On the afternoon of Saturday, May 18, at approximately 4 p.m., the Kennesaw State University Police Department issued a secure in-place alert to notify the campus community about reports of an armed intruder on the Kennesaw Campus. The suspect was later apprehended and detained by Cobb County Police. An all-clear notification was issued by the University at around 4:43 p.m. Both the KSUPD and GBI are collaborating on the ongoing investigation.

Expressing condolences to the victim’s family and friends, KSU President Kathy S. Schwaig stated, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
