Accident – Death – Obituary News : MABLETON – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently looking into an officer-involved shooting incident that took place during a stolen truck call in Cobb County. The Cobb County Police Department requested the GBI to carry out an independent investigation on May 17, 2024. The unfortunate event resulted in the death of Clifford Jacoby Beck, a 40-year-old man from Griffin, Georgia. Fortunately, no officers sustained any injuries during the incident.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred shortly before 2:40 p.m. when a Cobb County Police Officer spotted a stolen box-style truck near Mableton Parkway and Veterans Memorial Highway. Upon noticing the stolen vehicle, the officer called for backup units as they tailed the truck. The pursuit led officers to a gas station parking lot at the intersection of Old Floyd Road and Fontaine Road, where they tried to block the truck in. When one of the passengers in the truck promptly exited and complied with the officers’ commands, the driver, identified as Beck, attempted to flee the scene by driving into the officers’ vehicles. In response, officers fired shots at the truck, hitting Beck. Despite the vehicle catching fire, officers managed to extract Beck from the truck, and he was subsequently provided with medical attention by EMS personnel and firefighters. Beck was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The GBI’s independent investigation into the matter is ongoing. Once the investigation is concluded, the case file will be handed over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for further review and potential legal action. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty when dealing with unpredictable situations such as this one..
