Three young men, Santos Tiul-Chen, Pedro Pascal, and Victor Leonardo Pedro Gaspar, tragically lost their lives in a drowning incident at Franklin Lock and Dam in Alva, Florida. The trio, all members of the Jesus Es La Verdad Church in Fort Myers, were attending a church youth event when the tragedy occurred.
The incident unfolded when Tiul-Chen, who lacked swimming experience, entered the water and began to struggle. Despite his lack of swimming skills, Pascal bravely jumped in to try and rescue his friend. Gaspar also joined the rescue effort, but tragically, all three young men went under the water and did not resurface.
Emergency services responded swiftly, pulling the victims from the water and attempting life-saving measures. Regrettably, none of the individuals survived the ordeal.
Neyda Velasquez, a close friend of the victims, expressed profound shock and sorrow over the loss. She described the young men as dedicated individuals who were actively involved in the church’s activities.
Velasquez highlighted the heroism displayed by Pascal and Gaspar, noting that their selfless actions to save their friend were truly admirable. Despite the tragic outcome, their bravery in the face of danger is a testament to their character.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a fourth individual, who also attempted to assist the victims, survived the incident. The identity of this individual has not been disclosed.
In response to the tragic event, the Army Corps of Engineers has installed new signage in the area, warning against swimming in the vicinity of the lock and dam.
