A tragic incident occurred in Homer, Alaska, where a well-known wildlife photographer, Dale Chorman, lost his life to a moose attack. The 70-year-old photographer was doing what he loved most – capturing the beauty of wildlife in its natural habitat.
Chorman, who was aware of the risks involved in his profession, was photographing a female moose, also known as a cow moose, that had just given birth. After capturing a few shots of the mother moose with her newborn, Chorman and a friend attempted to locate the moose again for more pictures.
Unfortunately, their encounter with the moose took a tragic turn when the animal charged at them, causing Chorman to fall to the ground. Despite his friend’s efforts to help, Chorman succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Alaska State Troopers were alerted to the incident and arrived to find the moose had left the area. It was evident that the moose was merely defending her offspring, as confirmed by Chorman’s son, Nathan Chorman.
Moose calving season, which occurs from mid-May to mid-June, is a critical time when moose are protective of their young. It is essential for individuals to be cautious and recognise signs of agitation in moose, such as raised hackles, pinned back ears, and lip licking.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game highlighted that the moose population is facing challenges this year due to record snowfall, making food sources scarce. Chorman’s family acknowledged his understanding of wildlife and the risks associated with photographing them.
In a heartfelt statement, Nathan Chorman expressed his family’s love for Dale and his passion for sharing his wildlife photography with others. Despite the tragic outcome, Chorman’s legacy as a talented photographer, loving father, and husband will be cherished by many.
