HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Authorities have confirmed the identity of the individual who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Ka’u last Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Andre Joseph Fournier Sr., a 59-year-old resident of Ocean View.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. when Fournier was travelling southbound on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) and had just overtaken a number of vehicles near the Manuka State Park entrance.

Eyewitnesses report that following the overtaking manoeuvre, Fournier allegedly veered across double solid yellow lines and collided with a rock embankment on the Mauka side of the highway.

As a result of the impact, Fournier was thrown from his motorcycle and subsequently transported to Kona Community Hospital, where medical personnel sadly pronounced him dead at 10:30 p.m.

Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash, treating it as a coroner’s inquest to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the incident.

The untimely passing of Fournier marks the 18th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island so far this year, representing a significant increase from the corresponding period in the previous year when only 8 fatalities had been recorded.
