Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has recently released body-worn camera footage of deputies shooting a man who allegedly pointed a gun at residents of a Winter Park apartment complex last month. The incident took place at the Indigo Winter Park Apartments on U.K. Circle, where deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a man armed with a gun.
The man, identified as 47-year-old Jesse Santino Lewelling, was reportedly seen pointing the gun at several residents of the complex. A resident who made the 911 call described the situation as tense, with Lewelling allegedly pointing the gun at people’s faces and causing alarm among the residents.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies heard a gunshot and located Lewelling sitting under a gazebo near the complex’s pool, still armed with the gun. The situation escalated as onlookers stood dangerously close to Lewelling, posing a public safety concern. Video footage shows Lewelling eventually walking away from the gazebo as multiple deputies closed in on him.
Lewelling then ran through the complex with the gun in hand, prompting deputies to pursue him. The sheriff’s office helicopter video captured the moment when Lewelling ran towards a deputy with the gun, leading to the deputy firing at him. Lewelling dropped the gun but it remained within his reach until deputies secured it and provided medical aid.
Following the incident, Lewelling was taken to the hospital in critical condition and has since been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, resisting an officer with violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Additionally, he had an active warrant from California for larceny and weapons charges.
The deputy who discharged their weapon has been put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The sheriff’s office will also conduct an internal investigation once the FDLE’s review is complete and reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office.
