Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 70-year-old man tragically lost his life during a wildlife encounter in southern Alaska. The incident occurred when the man, identified as Dale Chorman, tried to take photos of a cow moose and her newborn calves near his home in Homer, Alaska.

Chorman, accompanied by a friend, came across the female moose and her two newborn calves in the city of Homer. As they attempted to capture the beauty of the wildlife through their camera lenses, the peaceful scene quickly turned into a nightmare when the cow moose attacked Chorman.

According to Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the moose charged at the two men and kicked Chorman, resulting in fatal injuries. Fortunately, Chorman’s companion escaped unharmed from the aggressive animal.

An initial report of the incident indicated that the moose’s protective instincts towards her calves led to the tragic outcome. Chorman’s body was later sent to the Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.

Female moose, especially when accompanied by their calves, can be extremely defensive and aggressive towards perceived threats. A small adult female moose can weigh up to 800 pounds and stand up to 6 feet tall, as noted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

McDaniel emphasised the importance of maintaining a safe distance from moose, particularly when they are with their young. He warned that cow moose with calves can be relentless in defending their offspring and urged the public to exercise caution when encountering these animals in the wild.

The Alaska Wildlife Troopers advise against approaching moose calves for photography or any form of interaction, as it may provoke a defensive response from the mother moose. It is crucial to respect the wildlife and their natural habitat to prevent such unfortunate incidents from reoccurring.

Homer, the location of the incident, is situated approximately 220 miles south of Anchorage on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, known for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes.
