Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper collided with a sign outside an office building in Oakland Park during a cross-county pursuit that culminated in Lauderdale Lakes on Tuesday morning. The trooper sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The chase was initiated in the West Kendall area after two young men allegedly stole a BMW. Trooper Ronald Melendez-Bonilla began trailing the vehicle on the Palmetto Expressway, but the driver accelerated northward, prompting a pursuit up Florida’s Turnpike.

Upon exiting onto Sunrise Boulevard, the suspects continued to evade authorities by heading up State Road 7. The chase took a dangerous turn when the driver manoeuvred into a McDonald’s parking lot and attempted to exit, resulting in a collision with Melendez-Bonilla’s cruiser. The impact caused the trooper’s vehicle to crash into a sign at 3075 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

The pursuit persisted along Oakland Park Boulevard, with the suspect trying to make a left turn onto State Road 7. However, a mechanical malfunction caused the BMW to mount the pavement and collide with a bus stop, bringing the chase to an abrupt end.

Following a brief attempt to flee from law enforcement, the two suspects, identified as 18-year-old Tommie Allen and 20-year-old Tyler Tyrone Hollins, were apprehended. Melendez-Bonilla was transported to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment of his injuries and is currently recuperating at home.

FHP Lt. Indiana Miranda confirmed that Allen and Hollins are facing charges of grand theft, fleeing and eluding, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest without violence.
