Two individuals have been reported missing following a tragic canoeing accident in northern Minnesota over the weekend.
Authorities were alerted to a “water emergency” on Iron Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on Saturday, May 18, at approximately 7:21 p.m. local time. Two canoes were reported to have gone over Curtain Falls, resulting in one individual being seriously injured and two others missing.
Rescue Efforts and Search Operation
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office dispatched a DNR helicopter to rescue the injured individual and another uninjured party. The injured person was transported to Essentia Duluth with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Search efforts resumed the following day, led by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad. Various agencies, including North Air Care, Virginia Fire, MN DNR helicopter, MART, Minnesota Air Rescue Team, and U.S. Forest Service, are assisting in the search operation.
Missing Canoeists and Injured Individuals
The two missing canoeists have been identified as 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen and Reis Melvin Grams, aged 40. Kyle Thomas Sellers, aged 47, was named as an injured canoeist, while Erik Michael Grams, 43, was involved in the incident, and Jared Lay Lohse was a group member.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area organization advises visitors to be prepared for risks and adverse conditions. Travelers should always wear a life jacket and be cautious of cold water and the potential for hypothermia, especially in spring.
Visitors are urged to avoid or approach moving water with caution. Weather conditions, such as strong winds over large lakes, can pose challenges for travelers. It is recommended to research trip plans and discuss them with experienced individuals before embarking on wilderness adventures.
Rescue Squad Statement
In a Facebook post, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad provided an update on the incident, stating that despite challenges, they successfully evacuated two injured patients and an uninjured individual from the campsite. The search for the two missing individuals continues.
