Authorities in northern Minnesota are currently searching for two missing individuals after a harrowing incident involving two canoes going over Curtain Falls on Iron Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, May 18, has left multiple people seriously injured and has sparked a large-scale search and rescue operation.

Search and Rescue Operation

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office received an alert of a “water emergency” on Iron Lake on Saturday evening, prompting an immediate response. Two canoes were reported to have gone over Curtain Falls, resulting in one person being seriously injured and two individuals going missing.

A DNR helicopter was deployed in the early hours of Sunday morning to rescue one of the injured individuals and another uninjured party. The injured individual was transported to Essentia Duluth for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Search efforts resumed on Sunday, led by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad. An individual who was with the group, but not involved in the incident, was safely flown out of the wilderness. The search operation is ongoing to locate the two missing individuals.

Missing Individuals

The two missing canoeists have been identified as 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen and 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams. 47-year-old Kyle Thomas Sellers was also named as an injured canoeist, while 43-year-old Erik Michael Grams was identified as the involved canoeist and Jared Lay Lohse as a group member.

Continued Search Efforts

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Rescue Squad are being assisted by North Air Care, Virginia Fire, MN DNR helicopter, MART, Minnesota Air Rescue Team, and U.S. Forest Service in their search efforts. Remote operated vehicles and drones will be utilized to search the area for the missing canoeists despite challenging rapid water conditions.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area organization has issued a statement advising visitors to be prepared for risk and adverse conditions in the remote wilderness area. They stress the importance of wearing a life jacket and caution against travelling in or near moving water.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad also released a statement on the incident, detailing the challenges faced during the rescue operation and the ongoing efforts to locate the missing individuals.
