Rajiv Gandhi’s political career, though short-lived, left a lasting impact on the nation. Serving as the Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, he was the youngest person to hold the office at the age of 46. His tenure marked a period of significant change for the country. Tragically, his life was cut short by the brutal assassination.
In 1987, Rajiv Gandhi made the controversial decision to send Indian peacekeeping forces to Sri Lanka to help restore peace during the civil war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan government. This decision was met with criticism both in India and abroad, and it is believed that the LTTE targeted him in retaliation.
The assassination took place while Rajiv Gandhi was campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Sriperumbudur. A female assassin, posing as a well-wisher, approached him and detonated a bomb, killing him and at least 14 others. The attacker was later identified as Kalaivani Rajaratnam, a member of the LTTE.
Following the assassination, the remaining phases of the Lok Sabha elections were postponed, and a week of mourning was declared. In 1999, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of seven individuals involved in the assassination. However, by 2022, all seven convicts had been released.
