Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragedy struck in Alaska as a man attempting to capture photos of two adorable newborn moose calves fell victim to a fatal attack by their protective mother, authorities revealed on Monday.

The harrowing incident unfolded as the man, identified as Dale Chorman from Homer, was fleeing the scene to escape the enraged moose. Another individual present at the time managed to escape unscathed.

According to Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the male victim lost his life on Sunday in the wake of the brutal moose assault.

These majestic creatures, known as the largest of the deer family, can reach staggering weights of up to 800 pounds for females and double that for males. Towering at nearly 6 feet tall, moose are formidable creatures in the wild.

The female moose had recently given birth to the calves in Homer, making her fiercely protective of her newborns.

“As they were traversing through the foliage in search of the moose, the cow moose launched a fatal attack on Dale,” McDaniel recounted.

Medical personnel pronounced Chorman deceased at the scene, with the cow moose swiftly retreating from the area, as confirmed by the Alaska State Troopers in an online statement.

This tragic incident echoes a similar event in 1995 when a moose fatally trampled a 71-year-old man attempting to enter a building on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. Witnesses reported that the animals were provoked by students throwing snowballs and harassing them, leading to the deadly outcome.

Alaska is home to approximately 200,000 moose, outnumbering the human population of around 737,000. While generally peaceful, moose can turn aggressive when threatened, as noted by the state Department of Fish and Game.

During calving season, moose exhibit heightened protectiveness over their young, often responding aggressively to perceived threats. It is advised to maintain a safe distance from these majestic creatures to avoid potential conflicts.

“Cow moose with calves are particularly prone to aggression, especially during the calving season. It’s crucial to exercise caution and respect their space,” McDaniel emphasized.
