The Pune Fire Brigade carried out a daring rescue operation in the early hours of Monday morning as the wall of an old wada in Ganesh Peth crumbled, trapping three individuals inside. Among those rescued was a 12-year-old girl, highlighting the swift and effective response of the emergency services in the face of danger.

The incident took place at Chorghe Wada around 1:38 AM, where Sheela Chorghe (40), her daughter Shruti (12), and her brother Pramod Kedar (41) were residing. The collapse of the wall blocked the main entrance, creating a barrier between the trapped individuals and their potential rescuers.

Fire officer Sunil Mane recounted the challenges faced by the rescue team, stating, “The debris obstructed our path, but with the assistance of the police, we quickly devised a plan to access the victims. Breaking into a nearby property, we reached the trapped individuals and successfully extricated them within 15 minutes of arrival at the scene.”

The timely intervention of a vigilant resident who heard the calls for help played a crucial role in alerting the authorities to the unfolding crisis. Despite their ordeal, the three individuals emerged unscathed from the incident, having displayed remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.

The collapse of the wall was attributed to the deteriorating condition of the wada, underscoring the importance of regular maintenance and structural assessments to prevent such incidents in the future. The authorities have urged property owners to prioritize the safety of their buildings and ensure compliance with building regulations to safeguard the lives of residents.
