The community of Lismore in New South Wales, Australia, is reeling from a heartbreaking tragedy as James Harrison, a local man, has been identified as the suspect in the murder-suicide of his two-year-old son. This devastating incident occurred just three months after an apprehended domestic violence order was taken out against Harrison by his former partner.
The harrowing events unfolded when the boy’s mother contacted Lismore Police in the NSW Northern Rivers region after Harrison failed to return their son on Sunday at 4:30 pm. Concerned for the child’s welfare, police visited Harrison’s unit at 6 pm, but received no response. They left to conduct further inquiries.
Later that evening, the boy’s grandmother contacted the authorities again, prompting a return visit to the unit. Tragically, upon entering the residence, police discovered the lifeless bodies of father and son.
Investigation Underway
Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell addressed the media on Monday, stating, “It was evident to us that the father had taken his own life and that of the two-year-old. This matter is currently under investigation on behalf of the coroner.” Thurtell clarified that there was no weapon involved in the incident, indicating that Harrison had devised a tragic system that led to the deaths of both himself and his son.
Court records revealed that Harrison’s former partner had obtained an apprehended domestic violence order against him in February. The conditions of the ADVO prohibited Harrison from assaulting or threatening his ex-partner, as well as from stalking, harassing, or intimidating her. Additionally, he was banned from causing harm to any property or animals belonging to her.
While Harrison had previous interactions with the police regarding domestic violence matters, Thurtell indicated that they were not deemed significant issues at the time.
