SAN JOSE, (FOX-35) – Authorities have revealed that the individual injured in a shootout with San Jose police over the weekend has been identified as 41-year-old Ricardo Villarreal, a felon in possession of a firearm.

San Jose Police Department’s Interim Chief, Paul Joseph, provided updates on the incident at a news conference on Monday afternoon, stating that Villarreal remains in critical condition.

Incident Details

The altercation took place on Sunday at approximately 4:16 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun from a van in an alleyway behind an apartment complex located in the 2700 block of Kollmar Drive. Neighbours had alerted the authorities after witnessing the alarming behaviour.

According to a witness account, the suspect not only discharged his firearm but also obstructed another resident’s access to the parking lot of the apartment complex while brandishing the weapon.

Upon arrival at the scene, two officers were immediately met with gunfire from Villarreal. In response, the officers returned fire in an attempt to neutralise the threat.

Despite the officers’ efforts, Villarreal reloaded his firearm and continued to shoot as he attempted to flee the area. Additional officers were called in to assist and encountered the suspect during his escape. At one point, Villarreal aimed his weapon at one of the responding officers, prompting another officer to discharge their firearm and strike the suspect.

Villarreal was swiftly transported to a local hospital for treatment, where he remains in critical condition.

Legal Implications

Chief Joseph emphasised that Villarreal’s possession of a firearm was illegal, given his status as a felon. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals unlawfully carrying weapons.

This recent shooting incident marks the third officer-involved shooting in San Jose this year, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring public safety.
