A spokesperson from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the body of the swimmer who went missing off Siesta Key’s Turtle Beach on Sunday evening has been found. The missing swimmer, identified as 23-year-old Jose Daniel Venta Ciro from Sarasota, was recovered near the area of 9150 Blind Pass Rd. after a passing boater located the body.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Sarasota County Fire Department, had been conducting recovery efforts for the missing swimmer approximately a quarter-mile north of where the body was eventually found.
According to the email sent by the Sheriff’s Office, the body was positively identified as the missing swimmer based on photographs provided to investigators. Recovery efforts have now been suspended by the SCSO and the Coast Guard, with the body set to be sent to the medical examiner’s office for further investigation.
Search and Recovery Efforts
The news of the recovery comes after a day of intense search and recovery efforts by multiple agencies. The Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and U.S. Coast Guard utilized air, marine, and land assets in their search for the missing swimmer.
The search had initially been suspended on Sunday night after several hours without success. However, it resumed on Monday morning, with two SCSO boats conducting a thorough search of the waters off Turtle Beach using specialized sonar equipment.
Despite the concerted efforts of the search teams, the missing swimmer was not located during the underwater search. Divers spent approximately 30 minutes underwater searching two identified locations without success.
