Anchorage, Alaska (AP) – In a tragic incident that has shocked the local community, a 70-year-old man from Homer, Alaska, was attacked and killed by a mother moose while attempting to take photographs of her two newborn calves. The victim, identified as Dale Chorman, lost his life in the encounter, which took place on Sunday.
According to Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the female moose had recently given birth to the calves in Homer. Chorman and another man were in the area looking for the moose when the mother suddenly attacked. The second man, who escaped unharmed, did not witness the fatal attack.
Medical responders pronounced Chorman dead at the scene, while the cow moose fled the area, as reported by Alaska State Troopers. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by wildlife encounters, especially during calving season.
In a similar incident in 1995, a 71-year-old man lost his life in a moose attack on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. Witnesses reported that the moose had been provoked by students throwing snowballs and harassing the animals, leading to the fatal encounter.
Alaska is home to around 200,000 moose, a significant number given the state’s human population of approximately 737,000. While moose are generally not aggressive, they can become defensive, particularly when protecting their young calves.
