Sarasota-born Auburn University football running back, Brian Battie, has been identified as one of the five victims of a tragic shooting incident that took place in a shopping plaza parking lot in Sarasota in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 22-year-old athlete was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to his head.

Auburn Football Head Coach, Hugh Freeze, took to social media on Monday afternoon to provide an update on Brian Battie’s condition, revealing that the young player was still on a ventilator.

Brian Battie, who attended both Sarasota High School and Braden River High School, where he excelled as a running back on the football teams, began his collegiate football career at the University of South Florida before transferring to Auburn last season, where he made a name for himself as the top kick returner.

Tragically, Brian Battie’s 24-year-old brother, Tommie Battie IV, also fell victim to the shooting and was pronounced dead. Tommie Battie IV, a former running back at Braden River High School, leaves behind a devastated family and community.

Three other individuals involved in the incident were also hospitalized, their conditions currently unknown. The shooting took place at the Tallywood Centre Plaza in the 3400 block of 17th St., according to Sarasota County deputies.
