Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An individual from Osceola County is currently in police custody following an alarming incident involving a machete at a graduation celebration near Big Rapids. The man reportedly threatened party attendees before escalating the situation further by confronting a corrections officer at the Mecosta County Jail.

Law enforcement officials from the state police post in Mt. Pleasant, in conjunction with deputies from the Mecosta County Sheriff’s department, responded to a distress call at the Green Township Hall around 2 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses recounted how the man, whose identity has not been disclosed pending formal charges, brandished a machete, shattered the front door glass, and forced entry into the venue during the graduation party.

According to Sgt. Michelle Williams, the Public Information Officer for the Michigan State Police Sixth District, individuals present at the party shared that the man made ominous remarks about everyone “going to hell” before being physically removed from the premises by three attendees using a chair as a barrier.

Following his expulsion from the township hall, the suspect fled to Big Rapids and drove onto the grounds of the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, where he allegedly menaced a corrections officer with the machete. Prompt action by the Big Rapids police officers, in collaboration with the corrections officer, led to the apprehension of the 36-year-old Hersey man, who now faces multiple felony charges.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in Mecosta County District Court today for his arraignment. Investigations into the events at the Green Township Hall are ongoing, with the State Police conducting inquiries into the initial incident, while the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is focusing on the alleged assault on the corrections officer.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident, with Sgt. Williams commending Mecosta County Central Dispatch and the various law enforcement agencies involved for swiftly resolving these dangerous encounters.
