The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office was called to North Jetty Park in Nokomis just after 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered one victim who tragically lost their life at the scene.
As a result of this incident, North Jetty Park will be closed on Monday, May 20, to allow the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Section to conduct their investigation at the scene.
This marks the third shooting death in Sarasota County since Thursday, when a 28-year-old man was fatally shot near the intersection of 31st Street and Osprey Avenue.
The second victim, Tommie Battie IV, was killed in another shooting early Saturday morning on 17th Street. Tommie, a 24-year-old individual, tragically lost his life in the incident. Additionally, four others were injured, including Tommie’s brother Brian Battie, a former star football player at Sarasota High School who currently plays as a running back at Auburn University. Brian is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.
