WESTPORT — A California man, Jordan Smith, 36, hailing from Tracy, has found himself in legal hot water after being implicated in a fraudulent scheme to withdraw money from a Westport resident’s bank account. Smith was formally charged on May 9 with first-degree identity theft and first-degree forgery.

The investigation into the fraudulent activity began in April 2023 when a Westport resident reported unauthorized attempts to withdraw funds from their bank account. Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that the suspect, identified as Jordan Smith, had deposited counterfeit checks into the account and subsequently tried to withdraw the funds.

Law enforcement authorities, armed with search warrants and video-surveillance recordings, collaborated with other agencies to piece together the evidence that pointed to Smith as the perpetrator of the fraudulent activities. A warrant for Smith’s arrest was swiftly issued, and he was apprehended on May 9 while at the state Superior Court in Stamford. He was formally charged and remanded into custody on $100,000 bond in connection with the charges brought against him in Westport.
