A 17-year-old boy who allegedly drove his car over a motorcycle in Pune on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, has been granted bail under certain conditions. The teenager, who comes from a prominent family in the city’s real estate sector, was reportedly driving a Porsche without a number plate while under the influence of alcohol. He has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Following the incident, the police are investigating whether the teenager had consumed alcohol and have conducted medical tests to confirm this. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has stated that the teenager’s father and the establishment that served him alcohol will also face legal consequences under the Juvenile Justice Act.
The accused had recently completed his Class 12 exams and was out partying with friends at a bar and pub in Mundhwa, Pune. It was during his journey home from the party that the fatal accident occurred at the Kalyani Nagar junction around 2.30 am. The victims of the accident, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, were both IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh.
Police seek to try the accused as an adult
On Monday, the Pune police chief revealed to The Indian Express that they are seeking to have the teenager tried as an adult due to the severity of the crime. Despite previous attempts to have the case moved to adult court being rejected, the police are considering appealing to the Bombay High Court.
The teenager has been granted bail on the condition that he writes an essay reflecting on the accident and collaborates with the traffic police for 15 days. This decision has sparked a debate on the appropriate legal action to be taken against minors involved in serious crimes.
As investigations continue into the tragic incident, the community mourns the loss of two valuable lives and calls for justice to be served.
