A prominent Sydney children’s author, Oliver Phommavanh, has been arrested and charged with online grooming of a minor, sending shockwaves through the literary community.
According to NSW Police, Phommavanh allegedly exploited his role as a children’s author to engage in inappropriate online interactions with young children.
The 41-year-old author was apprehended at his residence in Old Guilford after reports surfaced regarding his questionable communications with an underage girl.
On Friday, May 17, Strike Force Trawler conducted a raid at Phommavanh’s home, leading to the confiscation of multiple electronic devices containing explicit images and videos exchanged with a person believed to be a 13-year-old girl.
Following his arrest, Phommavanh was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with using online platforms to groom a child under 16 for sexual purposes and to solicit sexual activity from a minor.
During his appearance at Fairfield Local Court, Phommavanh was denied bail pending further investigations by Strike Force Trawler, highlighting the severity of the allegations against him.
Formerly a school teacher, Phommavanh transitioned to writing children’s books, using humour and storytelling to connect with young readers. His work, including the acclaimed book “Thai-Riffic!”, garnered recognition and awards within the literary community.
Despite his past success, Phommavanh’s reputation now hangs in the balance as he awaits his next court date on July 9 at Parramatta Local Court.
