TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tragedy struck in Fort Pierce on Saturday morning as a suspect and two victims lost their lives in an officer-involved shooting, confirmed by the police.
The incident unfolded just after 11 a.m. when Fort Pierce police received a report of a possible shooting victim near North 24th Street and Avenue M. While officers were attending to the injured individual, they heard multiple gunshots being fired in close proximity.
The armed suspect, identified as 28-year-old Bernard Smith from Fort Pierce, was later located on North 25th Street. A confrontation ensued between Smith and the officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that led to Smith’s demise. Thankfully, none of the officers sustained any injuries during the altercation.
Further investigation revealed two additional shooting victims in the vicinity, who were discovered by law enforcement and St. Lucie County deputies. Tragically, two of the three victims succumbed to their injuries, while the third victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Fort Pierce Police Major Michael Santiago expressed gratitude for the swift actions of the highly trained officers, stating, “This is something that officers are constantly faced with, the dangers of what they have to encounter on the streets. Fortunately, our highly trained officers were able to end this violent spree before it went any further.”
