Siliguri: A tragic accident in Sikkim’s Singtam district has left one person dead and four others seriously injured. The incident occurred when a vehicle carrying a five-member family from Kolkata veered off the road, plummeted down a mountain slope, and plunged into the Rani river at Sangkhola.

The family, hailing from Chowdhury para in north Kolkata, was on a holiday trip from Siliguri to Gangtok when the accident occurred around 5 am on Saturday. The driver of the Sikkim-registered commercial vehicle also lost his life in the tragic incident.

The deceased has been identified as Rabindra Nath Paul, aged 72. He was accompanied by Tapas Paul, Krishna Paul, Mira Paul, and a four-year-old girl. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall into the gorge and into the river. The bodies of the deceased were retrieved from the river, and Rabindra Nath Paul and the driver’s bodies have been kept in the mortuary of the district hospital in Singtam.

The injured victims were initially taken to the nearby district hospital in Singtam before being transferred to the Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok for further medical treatment.
