The incident occurred on Saturday morning near the intersection of Van Buren Street and First Avenue in downtown Phoenix. Three Phoenix police officers sustained injuries while attempting to arrest a suspect who became violent during the altercation.
Suspect Identified as 20-year-old Bobby Freeman
According to the Phoenix police department, officers witnessed a physical altercation between the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Bobby Freeman, and another individual at around 10 a.m. near the intersection of First Street and Fillmore Street. When officers intervened to break up the fight, Freeman fled the scene.
Freeman’s Violent Resistance
Subsequent radio broadcasts indicated that Freeman may have been armed with a knife and had attempted to stab someone before evading the police. A Phoenix police commander and two lieutenants located Freeman near 2nd Avenue and Fillmore Street. Despite commands to surrender, Freeman resisted arrest and physically assaulted the officers.
During the arrest attempt, Freeman reportedly punched the commander in the face and bit him on the forearm. He also assaulted one of the lieutenants by punching him in the face, while the other lieutenant sustained minor scrapes during the scuffle.
Police Injuries and Arrest of Freeman
The two lieutenants received on-site medical treatment for their injuries, while the commander was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Freeman was eventually apprehended and has since been booked into jail on multiple charges, including aggravated assault on police officers.
Unrelated to Downtown Demonstration
Notably, the incident took place in close proximity to a lawful demonstration happening in downtown Phoenix. However, authorities have confirmed that the violent altercation involving Freeman is not believed to be connected to the ongoing demonstration.
