Authorities in Mitooma District are currently investigating a heartbreaking incident that resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals due to electrocution. The unfortunate event took place on May 18, 2024, at around 5:00 AM, on the premises of Nyakishojwa Secondary School playground in Rurehe Sub-county, Mitooma District.
The spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi police, Marcial Tumusiime, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as 14-year-old Christian Gumoshabe from Rurehe village in Kabira Sub-county and 16-year-old Patience Kabahinda from Bushasha A Lc1 in Ryengyerero Parish, both residents of Mitooma District.
According to reports, Nyakishojwa Catholic Parish was hosting Pentecostal prayer conferences, attracting large congregations for spiritual activities. The tragic incident occurred during the annual four-day conference, where Gumoshabe and Kabahinda were active participants.
On the fateful morning, Gumoshabe was electrocuted and collapsed, prompting Kabahinda, who was serving as an usher, to come to his aid. Tragically, she too suffered electrocution upon contact with Gumoshabe’s body, leading to the untimely demise of both individuals before they could be taken to the hospital.
A subsequent investigation by police detectives revealed that the electricity supply for the event’s sound system and lighting was provided by a generator. The setup was reportedly managed by Anatoli Guloba Mbaasa, who was not a qualified electrician. Due to heavy rainfall, certain areas of the ground became waterlogged, causing the cables to be exposed. This resulted in the metallic tent stand touched by the victims becoming electrified due to a combination of rainwater and exposed electric wires.
The community in Mitooma District is in mourning following this tragic incident, and authorities are working diligently to uncover the full details surrounding the electrocution deaths of Christian Gumoshabe and Patience Kabahinda.
