A tragic incident unfolded in Imphal, Manipur on May 18, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of individuals, resulting in the death of a 42-year-old man from Jharkhand. The victim, identified as Shree Ram Hansda, was a resident of Godda district in Jharkhand and had been working as a labourer in Manipur. Additionally, two other individuals, also believed to be from Jharkhand, sustained injuries in the attack.
Authorities are currently conducting investigations into the incident in an attempt to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this senseless act of violence.
Ethnic Violence Escalates in Manipur
The shooting incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo people and the Meitei people in Manipur, which first erupted on May 3, 2023. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 221 lives and the displacement of over 50,000 individuals.
Furthermore, the violence has led to widespread looting of weapons from police armouries, with more than 4,500 firearms falling into the hands of civilians. This has heightened tensions and exacerbated the already volatile situation in the region.
