Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Officials from the Professional Standards Division of the Greensboro Police Department are currently conducting an investigation following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 31-year-old man in a shooting involving a police officer. The incident took place on Saturday at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Lawndale Drive, where officers responded to reports of an armed individual.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered the man, identified as 31-year-old Gerald Pinckney, who appeared to be brandishing a handgun. Despite repeated commands from the officer to drop the weapon, Pinckney ignored the warnings and continued to advance towards the officer while still holding the weapon. In response, the officer discharged their firearm, ultimately striking Pinckney. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were immediately summoned to the scene.

Both officers and EMS personnel administered aid to Pinckney before he was transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, Pinckney succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.

Collaborative Investigations Underway

In accordance with standard procedures for critical incidents resulting in fatalities, the Greensboro Police Department has enlisted the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to conduct a criminal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Additionally, the department’s Professional Standards Division will be initiating an internal investigation to ascertain whether the officers involved adhered to departmental protocols.
