Two individuals, one of whom was a member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), have tragically lost their lives in a violent attack that took place in the Kattuli area of Langadu in Rangamati.
The deceased have been identified as 45-year-old UPDF member Bidya Dhan Chakma, also known as Tilak, and 35-year-old local resident Dhanyaman Chakma.
The incident unfolded on Saturday morning in the Bhaledi Ghat vicinity of Langadu Union.
UPDF Blames Jana Samhati Samiti for the Attack
UPDF Rangamati District Unit Organiser Shachal Chakma has pointed the finger at the Shantu Larma-led Jana Samhati Samiti for orchestrating the attack. According to Chakma, a group of seven armed individuals launched the assault on UPDF members who were carrying out activities at Bhaledi Ghat around 8:30 am.
Tragically, the attack resulted in the immediate deaths of two individuals, as confirmed by Chakma.
Chakma further alleged that Larma had given the orders for the killings as part of a scheme to gain favour from the Bangladesh government, conspire to annul the UPDF-led CHT Regulation, 1900, and hinder the ongoing movement against the oppression and mistreatment faced by the Bawm ethnicity in Bandarban.
Despite attempts to reach out to various leaders within the Jana Samhati Samiti for their perspective on the incident, they remained unreachable.
Police Confirmation and Investigation
Police authorities, led by Mir Abu Towhid, Superintendent of Rangamati Police, have officially verified the fatalities resulting from the attack.
Due to the remote location of the crime scene, law enforcement personnel anticipate delays in reaching the site. Further details will be disclosed following the return of the investigating officers from the scene, as explained by Towhid.
