Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Massachusetts last September when a 14-year-old boy tragically passed away after consuming a tortilla chip infused with a potent chemical compound commonly found in chilli peppers. The cause of the young boy’s death was only recently determined, shedding light on the dangers of extreme spicy food challenges.

Identified as Harris Wolobah, the teenager had an underlying congenital heart defect, which exacerbated the effects of the spicy chip he ingested during Paqui’s notorious “One Chip Challenge.” This challenge involves consuming a single tortilla chip seasoned with the intensely hot Carolina Reaper pepper and the Naga Viper pepper.

After an investigation by the chief medical examiner’s office, it was confirmed that Wolobah suffered from cardiopulmonary arrest as a result of consuming a food substance with a high concentration of capsaicin, the active component responsible for the spiciness in chilli peppers.

A spokesperson for Paqui emphasised that the One Chip Challenge was designed for adults only and featured clear warnings against consumption by children or individuals with a sensitivity to spicy foods or underlying health conditions.

Capsaicin, the fiery compound found in chilli peppers, can vary in intensity. The Carolina Reaper Pepper, one of the peppers used in the challenge, ranks just below pepper spray on the Scoville scale. In comparison, the Naga Viper pepper, with a heat level of approximately 1.2 million Scoville heat units, far exceeds the spiciness of a jalapeno pepper, which measures around 5,000 heat units.
