Accident – Death – Obituary News : The family of a driver involved in a collision with a Falls Police cruiser has expressed discontent with a press release from the city regarding the incident. The release stated that no one was “seriously injured” in the accident at the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard and 80th Street on Wednesday morning.

Relatives of Rosario Corieri, aged 87, revealed that the Falls resident has been moved to the trauma unit at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment of a brain bleed. This came after he was initially assessed at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center following the accident.

Maryanne Corieri, his wife, highlighted the severity of his condition by stating, “My husband is very seriously ill.” She explained that he was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial initially, where tests revealed the brain bleed, prompting his transfer to ECMC.

“He’s been through so many different illnesses,” she added. “At this age, it’s challenging to recover fully. He’s weaker than before and was just starting to regain strength due to previous serious health issues.”

The crash occurred at 10:22 on Wednesday and is currently under investigation by Falls Police Crash Management Unit investigators. A marked Falls Police cruiser, identified as car No. 81, was reported to be travelling east on Niagara Falls Boulevard in “emergency mode,” responding to a service call.

According to the police statement, the cruiser went through a red light at the 80th Street intersection and collided with a 2010 Nissan that had entered the intersection from the north. The impact caused the police cruiser to spin into a 2016 Jeep travelling westbound.

The driver of the Jeep, a 44-year-old man, was examined at the crash scene and did not require treatment. Both the patrol car driver, Officer Kyle Bond, an eight-year force veteran, and Corieri, the Nissan driver, were taken to NFMMC by ambulance for evaluation.

While the police press release mentioned that both individuals were discharged from NFMMC after treatment for “non-life-threatening injuries,” Roy Corieri, son of the driver, clarified that his father was transferred to ECMC. As of Friday, his father remains at ECMC receiving treatment for a brain bleed and broken ribs.

Roy Corieri revealed that his father was alone in the vehicle, heading north on 80th Street. When the light turned green, he proceeded through the intersection and was struck by the eastbound patrol car. Fortunately, the officer managed to avoid hitting his father’s driver’s side door, mitigating the severity of the impact.

“My father claims he did not hear a siren. I don’t know if the police car actually had the siren on. I guess that would be something they will be looking into,” Roy Corieri stated.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the siren of the patrol car and observing its flashing lights as it approached the intersection. Police investigators mentioned that at the time of their initial press release, EMTs treating the crash victims did not perceive any serious injuries. However, further tests, including a CAT scan on Corieri, revealed the brain bleed, leading to his transfer to ECMC.

As of Friday evening, police have been informed that doctors at ECMC have managed to “stabilize” Corieri’s condition, providing some hope for his recovery. The investigation into the incident continues as the family seeks clarity and accountability..
