Lucas Macaj, the missing hiker whose remains were recovered on Thursday in Rocky Mountain National Park, has been identified as a U.S. Space Force sergeant stationed at Schriever Space Force Base.

Macaj, aged 23, served as a space operator for the 8th Combat Training Squadron, which is part of Space Delta 8 based at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs. He was a valued member of the Space Delta 8 team, according to a press release.

Condolences from Space Delta 8

Col. David A Pheasant, commander of Space Delta 8, expressed his heartfelt condolences on the loss of Macaj. He stated, “Space Delta 8 is a family and we have lost one of our own. I extend my deepest personal condolences to family, friends, and teammates who will be grieving through their loss. We will make every effort to ensure those within our team grieving this loss have full access to the trained helping agencies available.”

Service and Awards

Macaj joined the Space Force in August 2023, transferring from the U.S. Marine Corps. He was recognised for his service with the Air and Space Longevity Service Award among other accolades.

Recovery and Investigation

Macaj’s body was found on Mills Glacier, near Lamb’s Slide, following a significant fall. His remains were airlifted to a landing zone in Rocky Mountain National Park and then transferred to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office for further examination.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and investigation to determine the cause of Macaj’s death.

Timeline of Events

Macaj was reported missing after attempting to summit Longs Peak on Sunday. His last communication was at 1 p.m. on Sunday when he messaged a friend from the peak.

Rangers discovered Macaj’s vehicle still parked at the Longs Peak Trailhead early Monday morning. The park experienced severe storms on Sunday afternoon, adding to the challenges of the search and rescue operation.
