Identified as Omar Bin Omran (or Imran), the individual mysteriously disappeared in the city of Djelfa, Algeria, 27 years ago. His family had long presumed him to be deceased, especially during the turbulent civil war between Islamist rebel groups and the Algerian government that ravaged the country for a decade in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Now aged 45, Omar was rescued on May 12, leading to the arrest of a 61-year-old individual who is currently in police custody.
Images capturing the moment of Omar’s discovery have since gone viral, with torchlights piercing the darkness of a pit surrounded by hay. Omar is seen looking up in astonishment at the search party, with pieces of straw sticking to his hair as he takes in his surroundings.
Revealing Images of Omar’s Discovery
A series of photographs have emerged, including one of Omar emerging from the underground chamber, believed to be a sheep pen. Another image shows him as a teenager, seated with a dog and young children before his sudden disappearance.
According to reports from Algerian newspaper El Khabar, Omar, who was just 19 years old at the time, vanished after leaving home to attend vocational school.
In a tragic twist, Omar’s mother sadly passed away in 2013 without ever learning the truth about her son’s fate. It is said that Omar was informed of his mother’s death while still in captivity.
