MADURAI: Tragedy struck on Friday afternoon as a 17-year-old lad lost his life to the merciless currents of a flash flood at the Old Courtallam Falls in the Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. The victim, identified as Ashwin, a student in Class XI hailing from NGO Colony in Palayamkottai, was swept away while enjoying a leisurely bath at the popular waterfall.
The incident occurred around 2.30 pm when unexpected rain in the Western Ghats triggered sudden flash floods, catching Ashwin and other bathers off guard. Chaos ensued as tourists frantically sought help, leading to the swift response of police personnel and nearby shopkeepers who rushed to the scene.
Despite the valiant efforts of the authorities, Ashwin could not be saved from the raging waters. District collector A K Kamal Kishore and superintendent of police T P Suresh Kumar, along with the Fire and Rescue Services team, immediately launched a search and rescue operation.
Tragically, Ashwin’s lifeless body was discovered trapped amidst the rocks in a stream branching off from the falls, approximately a kilometre away from the bathing spot. The district collector expressed his heartfelt condolences, acknowledging the exhaustive search efforts that led to the recovery of the victim’s remains.
It was revealed that prior warnings had been issued to the public through media channels regarding the anticipated heavy rainfall in the Tenkasi district, urging caution. In response, all relevant departments were placed on high alert to mitigate the potential risks.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have imposed a temporary ban on bathing activities at all waterfalls in the district until further notice, emphasizing the importance of safety and vigilance in such natural settings.
