The picturesque shores of Spring Lake turned into a scene of tragedy on May 4 when a 23-year-old man from Belleville lost his life while swimming in the ocean. The victim, identified as Wilmer Lalvay, was found lying facedown in the surf on an unguarded beach by the authorities who responded to the call of a drowning swimmer shortly after 2 p.m. that Saturday.

Despite efforts to save Lalvay at the scene, he was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was sadly pronounced dead. The incident prompted a coordinated response from multiple agencies including the police from Spring Lake Heights, Belmar, and Sea Girt, as well as the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, Spring Lake Fire Department, and the SMART Team of off-duty lifeguards.

In the wake of this tragedy, efforts are underway to raise funds for Lalvay’s funeral expenses and to facilitate the repatriation of his body to his native Ecuador. A GoFundMe campaign has already garnered $1,855 in donations, with a target of $10,000 set to support the cause.
