Three Men Arrested in San Mateo Roofing Scam Targeting Elderly Residents

(KRON) – Authorities in San Mateo have apprehended three individuals believed to be involved in a string of fraudulent roofing schemes that specifically targeted elderly residents in the area.

The initial incident was reported back in November 2023. Through their investigation, law enforcement officials discovered a group of Caucasian males with “Irish accents” operating under the guise of a fictitious construction company named “Statewide Roofing and Siding,” with the sole intention of scamming vulnerable elderly individuals, as stated by the police.

Reports indicate that Statewide Roofing and Siding utilised a counterfeit contractor’s license to overcharge victims for construction services that were deemed “incomplete and likely unnecessary.”

On May 7, the San Mateo Police Department was alerted by a victim who alleged that a roofing company hired to repair his mother’s residence was engaging in fraudulent activities. Following a supposedly “free” roof inspection, the company claimed minor repairs were required and promptly commenced the work, according to police reports.

However, as time progressed, the individuals involved in the roofing scam increasingly added extra charges and insisted on additional work before eventually recommending a complete roof replacement, authorities reported.

During the investigation of the May 7 incident, it was discovered that the suspects were using false identities and an additional fictitious business name, “Teco Roofing and Masonry.” Subsequently, on May 8, law enforcement officials apprehended the three suspects linked to the roofing scam.

The suspects have been identified as Charlie Anderson, 22, David Anderson, 39, and Darren Temple, 40, all residents of Virginia. The trio were taken into custody and booked into San Mateo County Jail on various charges, including theft from elderly or dependent adults, obtaining money under false pretences, fraudulent use of a counterfeit contractor license, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

San Mateo Police continue to investigate these incidents and are urging any additional victims to come forward.

Authorities are appealing to individuals who have had roofing work completed by Statewide Roofing and Siding or Teco Roofing and Masonry to contact Officer Thornburg at the San Mateo Police Department.
