Four historical homicides of women — occurring approximately 50 years ago — have been linked to a deceased serial killer, according to Alberta RCMP. Authorities believe that this killer may be responsible for a larger number of deaths.

“Alberta RCMP have connected four historical homicides of young women from the 1970s to a serial sexual offender and killer who is no longer alive,” stated the RCMP in a news release on Thursday afternoon. “The Alberta RCMP Historical Homicide Unit (HHU) suspects that there may be additional unsolved homicides connected to this individual.”

On Thursday afternoon, the Calgary Police Service announced that they will hold a media briefing on Friday to discuss their involvement in the investigation. Inspector Kevin Forsen from the CPS Major Crimes Section will be available to answer questions from journalists at 1 p.m. The RCMP in Edmonton also plan to brief the media on Friday morning, estimating that the briefing may last 1.5 hours due to the volume of information to be presented.

Authorities informed the media that “while the information, images, and discussions are intended for public consumption, the presentation itself will not be available for public streaming due to the potentially sensitive and disturbing nature of the content that may be disclosed.”

The Thursday press release did not specify which murders are linked to this serial killer, but unsolved cases of young women’s murders in the Calgary area have haunted the city for decades.

One of the cases mentioned above involves the November arrest of Ronald James Edwards, a 73-year-old resident of Sundre, in connection with the death of a young woman in January 1976. This case is currently before the courts, and Edwards is set to stand trial for a non-capital murder charge in March 2025.
