Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident occurred in Coal Mountain, West Virginia, on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a coal miner. The miner, identified as Virgil Paynter, lost his life while operating an excavator at the CM Energy Operations LP Surface Mine.

Governor Jim Justice expressed his condolences following the incident, stating, “This is truly a heartbreaking tragedy because we lost another incredible West Virginia hero. We should all be grateful for Mr. Paynter’s service, just as we should be thankful for all the miners across our state and country.”

Justice highlighted the importance of the coal mining industry in powering and supplying steel for homes, states, and nations. He called for unity in remembering and honouring the sacrifices made by miners in their line of work.

The death of Virgil Paynter marks the first coal mine fatality in West Virginia for the year 2024. Nationally, it is the second coal miner death this year, with the first occurring in Pennsylvania in January.

According to the Associated Press, there were a total of nine coal miner deaths in the United States in the previous year.

Authorities from the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training, as well as the Mine Safety and Health Administration, are currently on-site at the mine to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

At this time, further details surrounding the circumstances of the miner’s death have not been made public.
