Authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office are on the hunt for a suspect responsible for the tragic shooting of a 14-year-old boy at El Dorado Park in Lancaster earlier this week. The incident has left the victim’s family in a state of devastation.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Monday at the park located at 44500 5th Street E. The young teenager, identified as Benny Gutierrez, was fatally shot during the incident. His mother, Rosalie Gutierrez, shared with KTLA’s Rick Chambers that she had seen her son just an hour before the tragic incident unfolded.
Describing Benny, his mother said, “He was funny, outgoing, loving, and adored his sisters.” The initial reports suggest that Benny, along with a friend and several other teenagers, were at the park when the shooting took place. Allegations indicate that Benny may have been involved in painting gang-related graffiti on a park wall when shots were fired from a car in the parking lot, resulting in his untimely death.
The young victim was struck by a bullet and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Gutierrez family learned about the heartbreaking news six hours later through social media, sending shockwaves of grief and disbelief through their hearts.
“My heart sank because it was my baby,” shared Benny’s older sister, Crysta Gutierrez, during an emotional interview with KTLA. “I just couldn’t believe it because the pain was so unbearable.”
Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 200 pounds, Benny was a towering presence among his sisters. He was an aspiring soccer player but also had a gentle side, described as a “teddy bear” by his family.
“People on the outside thought he was a tough guy, but on the inside he was just a little kid who was afraid of everything,” revealed Crysta, shedding light on Benny’s true nature. In the wake of the tragedy, friends and family have been gathering at the park every evening to pay tribute to Benny.
“I know Benny looks big for his age, but he’s just a kid,” expressed Benny’s cousin, Cindy Estrada. “He’s just funny. He loves eating hot chips. He loves watching movies. It’s really family-friendly. He’s not a gangster or anything like that.”
Expressing her anguish and determination for justice, Benny’s mother had a powerful message for those responsible for her son’s death. “You took the life of a child. My world was him,” she declared. “He was my baby, and I was devoted to him. So if you hear this, you will be caught, and we will bring justice.”
