In the most recent violent incident on the county’s transit system, a man on a subway bus in Encino stole a fellow passenger’s cellphone after hitting the victim with pliers during a brazen daytime robbery, authorities reported.
Police Response and Arrest
Officers were called to the scene at Balboa and Ventura boulevards in Encino following reports of a stabbing attack on a Metro bus just after 2 p.m., according to Jeff Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon arrival, it was revealed that a man had assaulted another passenger by striking them in the chest with a pair of pliers during the bus journey. Metro authorities stated that the police arrested a man attempting to flee the scene on suspicion of assault.
Victim’s Condition
The victim, who was struck with the pliers, was assessed by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics but did not require medical attention.
Arrest and Charges
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Michael Lindsey, was charged with robbery and is currently being held on a bail amount of $1.1 million. Lindsey had previously been cited for providing false identification to a police officer in Azusa and had pleaded no contest to theft of personal property in an unrelated incident in November, according to court records.
Recent Spike in Violent Incidents
This robbery is part of a recent surge in violent incidents on the county’s transit system, including two stabbings that occurred on or near the subway system the day prior. However, Metro officials have stated that the crime rate per passenger on the system has decreased.

Despite the decline in reported crimes, bus drivers continue to face challenges. Earlier this month, hundreds of bus drivers staged a sickout to protest the rising number of assaults by passengers. Unionized train and bus operators have criticised Metro for not responding effectively to violence in the system.

Metro has implemented several security measures to address these concerns, including deploying more security guards on buses to prevent assaults and installing barriers to protect riders. These barriers, approved last month, are set to be installed on buses in the coming year. The agency is also developing longer-term plans that involve adding dedicated traffic safety teams for bus drivers.

Metro acknowledges the challenges faced by bus operators, who are the primary point of contact for over 80% of Metro riders. The agency recognises the fear experienced by drivers and their families due to senseless attacks, particularly linked to untreated mental illness and drug addiction.
